Vegan Hot Dog Recipe! #carrotdog
Do you think I am crazy town crazy? Well, I just maybe but you will BE crazy town crazy about the new way to eat a hot dog. Try this Vegan Hot Dog Recipe I triple hot dog dare you!
I miss hot dogs. Honestly, when we are camping I want to whittle a stick and cook a nice juicy hot over the open campfire. But last time I tried that I almost ruined my trip to the mountains. It was more like a trip to the loo! Plus ever since my cancer diagnosis I have sworn off processed meat products. That does not stop the craving for a hot dog!
I will be the first to admit there are many versions of this recipe swirling around, so before you deem me a recipe food genius this is just my version of someone else’s vision of Vegan Hot Dog heaven.
How Does it Taste?
Like a hot dog! The texture is not quite the same as the processed meat kind but if you add the crunchy cabbage slaw at the bottom your brain is fooled into thinking that is where the crunch is coming from. I was so skeptical but also pleasantly surprised when I finally landed on a marinate and works and taste great.

Oh no you didn't! Oh yes we did! No more processed meat hot dog, try this sneaking switch turning the hot dog into the #cacnerhatesitfood
- 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into bun length I like to cut mine with tapered ends like a hot dog
- 1/4 cup Bragg's Liquid Aminos or Soy Sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tbs balsamic vinegar
- 1 tbs sesame oil
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 tsp liquid smoke must have for that meaty flavor
- 2 cloves garlic, mashed and peeled
- 1/4 tsp dried ginger
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbs olive oil or avocado oil
- 2 whole wheat hot dog buns
- 1/2 cup shredded cabbage
- 1/4 cup diced purple onion
- yellow organic mustard
After peeling and cutting carrots. Boil them in water for about 6 minutes until they are soft but not mushy.
While carrots are cooking make the marinade. In a bowl add next 10 ingredients to a glass container with a tight seal.
When hot dog, I mean carrots are finished cooking. Run them under some cool water to stop the cooking process. Add them to the marinade and seal tightly.
Marinate carrots for at least 24 hours. This allows all the flavors to infuse and give you that hot dog taste. When you think about it, give them a good shake in the container.
After 24 hours, heat a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and about 1/4 cup of the marinade. Cook carrots for about 8 minutes until browned.
Serve in a heated bun with cabbage on the bottom, carrot dog and then onions and yellow mustard.
You can use any topping you like for this hot dog. If you like vegan chili make a chili dog! How about relish and sauerkraut! Vegan cheese and stone ground mustard. You pick! YUM!
