Detox Smoothie – Cool Pineapple Cilantro
If you know me you know I don’t throw the word “detox” around very often. Do you remember when saying “I’m in Detox” meant something completely different? 😉 My honest opinion on the subject is that sometimes detoxing the body can cause more harm than good. When you alter your chemical balance by detoxing with a drastic course of action you can possibly do more harm than good. Mostly my concern for detoxing comes from people finding a “detox” on Google and giving it a try without any professional guidance. If you want to detox hire a professional to help you. Don’t use your own body as a science lab, there are proven methods and programs that can help you. Check out Dr. Axe’s Secret Detox for an example of what to do!
If you are experiencing any of the following effects of a detox you should consult a professional to guide you. Some are not to be taken lightly and can cause more problems than you were trying to get rid of in the first place.
- excessive acute hair loss
- heart palpitations
- change in eye sight
- memory loss
- muscle weakness
- weakened immune system
- sudden onset of depression
- bouts of acne on face, back, chest, buttocks, and neck
So why in the world am I telling you all these negative things about detoxing and giving you a detoxifying smoothie recipe? I do believe that there is such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” Shocking your system into submission is not my goal with this recipe. A gentle detoxing effect is natural with most real whole foods that you are consuming. Let’s take lemon water for example. It’s simple, water when you add lemon helps the liver clean and repair the body, especially when you drink it first thing in the morning. It is easy on the body and although it is detoxing it not harmful. The recipe below for the Detox Smoothie is full of cilantro. Cilantro is an amazing herb that is awesome at clean sweeping heavy metals out of the body. It is gentle and will not disrupt the body chemistry in a negative way. Bonus, it is raw in this smoothie and will have the vital nutrients you need even beyond the detoxing effect it has. The pineapple is also a great anti-inflammatory, especially when the core is left in. The coconut milk contains healthy fats that are good for the gut! Triple the goodness! By the way this smoothie does not contain protein so it should be used more as a healthy drink alternative and not a meal replacement.
½ cup fresh coconut milk
juice of 1 lime or lemon
2-3 cups frozen fresh pineapple with core
1 cup cilantro, packed into cup
1 cup coconut water, more if you want it thinner
OPTIONAL: ½ fresh organic cucumber
Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Add more coconut water to achieve desired consistency. Drink immediately or store covered in refrigerator for 24 hours. Blend again before drinking.
